Chinchilla Agouti
Chinchilla Gene is next on the C allele. Chinchilla gene is recessive to full color but dominate to sable,
pointed white, and REW. Chinchilla gene removes all yellow pigment and leaves behind the black
pigment (or blue, Chocolate, lilac pigment). All Chinchilla colors can have regular colored eyes or grey
marbled eyes…the standard may specify others wise like in the case of steels and pearls but
genetically all chins may have marbled eyes.
Agouti based chinchillas just like regular full color agoutis can vary widely due to wideband gene,
umbros, and other modifiers. Rufus factoring could be at play and could give a very undesirable
bronzing appearance that even after junior molt never goes away. Juniors in Chinchilla variety may
have a bronzed coat and its normal and will shed out once mature. If the new coat comes back in with
bronzing it's advised to not use that individual in a clean color breeding program.
Black Chinchilla- Color is Salt and Pepper with jet black ticking all over, distinct rings, and a slate blue
under color, eyes are brown or grey marbled. Kits are born black with white agouti markings and
develop the salt and pepper coloring as they mature. Genotype is A-B-cchd-D-E-
Blue Chinchilla- Color is salt and pepper but instead of jet black ticking the ticking is blue, rings are
distinct, with a blue under color, eyes are blue grey or marbled. Kits are born blue and gain the salt and
pepper appearance as they mature. Genotype is A-B-cchd-ddE-
Chocolate Chinchilla- Color is salt and pepper but instead of jet black ticking the ticking is Chocolate,
rings are distinct, with a dove grey under color, eyes are brown or marbled with slight ruby glow. Kits are
born Chocolate and gain the salt and pepper appearance as they mature. Genotype is A-bbcchd-D-E-
Lilac Chinchilla- Color is salt and pepper but instead of jet black ticking the ticking is lilac, rings are
distinct, with a pale dove under color, eyes are lilac grey or marbled with slight ruby glow. Kits are born
lilac and gain the salt and pepper appearance as they mature. Genotype is A-bbcchd-ddE-
